THE FORTICA IN HVAR ON THE CROATIAN COAST 10/08/2009

In 2004, I backpacked through Europe for six weeks. I traveled by boat along the coast of Croatia and docked in a beautiful sea town called Hvar for a few days.

Construction of this "fortica" or fortress (seen below), located 100 meters above the town, began in 1282 and took nearly three centuries to complete. Funding for continued construction largely came from selling salt.
