There’s a layer-upon-layer feel in this piece, but also a sense of fragility that comes from a “here I am” setting where there’s no pretense. I prefer the slight blurry softness of this versus what a crystal sharp image might evoke. I think it gives a sense of vulnerability and truth like someone about to disrobe and hoping for acceptance….
Petals Away
You know how you never tire of seeing a sunset or a sunrise? It’s simply a marvel each and every time. That’s how it was with the roses yesterday. I’ve photographed them over and over and played with the images even longer, cropping, washing them of color, and searching for that certain “feel”. I’ve held the petals in my hands and felt the thorns prick my fingers like a playful kitten. It’s been a beautiful exploration. This makes number 4 .. or is it 5 that I’ve posted on my online art gallery today..?

The rose has graced our planet for 35 million years. What a thought. Hard to even wrap my brain around that much time. What's equally amazing is how long the rose has symbolized love and beauty.

The pink rose (the photo above was Featured in #1 Artist of Redbubble) was the dominant species of wild roses and thought to be one of the earliest roses in existence. Pink was also the color of rose depicted in some of the earliest known pieces of art.
I read that during the fifteenth century, the rose was used as a symbol for the factions fighting to control England. The white rose symbolized York, and the red rose symbolized Lancaster, as a result, the conflict became known as the “War of the Roses.”
During the 17th century roses were in such high demand that royalty considered roses or rose water as legal tender, and were often used as barter and for payments.
This 35 million year old flower is still one of the most popular ways to say “I love you” or express appreciation or congratulations. Its fan base is worldwide and I can’t imagine a day when roses won’t conjure up images of beauty and love, elegance and refinement. On the other hand, there is the Kevin Spacey movie ‘American Beauty’ where rose petals leave one with a creepy feeling … hmmm…These roses and more are allfor sale as greeting cards or prints ...
