Examiner.com reports: International attention has increased dramatically over the last few years, and organizations like the International Fund for Animal Welfare have imbedded activists such as Sheryl Fink directly into the killing zone.

Fink suggests what troubles many is that "baby seals just a few weeks old are being shot at on small pans of ice" says an Examiner.com article "then clubbed or hooked and brought onboard the sealing ships to be skinned. Few sealers have been checking to see if the seals are unconscious before hooking or slicing them open."

Each year off of Canada’s east coast, the Canadian government allows thousands of seals to be hunted and killed to supply the global fur market with seal products. Seals as young as 3 to 5 months old are the main target of the hunters as their fur sells for a substantially higher price.

In an article just released, (June 2011) Wildlife Extra is applauding European Parliamentarians for taking yet another step forward in supporting the European Union’s banning of seal products, a move that has Canada crying fowl and seeking legal recourse from the World Trade Organization.

IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) urges Chinese consumers to reject cruelty-tainted seal products

“The Canadian Government can try and try again to dump unwanted seal products on other countries, but as the EU ban has shown, they may not succeed,” said Sheryl Fink, Director of IFAW’s Seal Program, “Chinese consumers are more ethical and more aware of the truth about the seal hunt than the Canadian Government is giving them credit for.” Fink added.
