PRISONER'S BLACK HOOD WHILE BEING EXECUTED SPORTS A WESTINGHOUSE ELCECTRIC COMPANY LOGO - photo by Weegee
"For an intense decade between 1935 and 1946, [Photographer] Weegee (1899–1968) was one of the most relentlessly inventive figures in American photography. His graphically dramatic and often lurid photographs of New York crimes and news events set the standard for what has become known as tabloid journalism." source
"Macabre was Weegee's specialty. Case in point, the photographer took this shot of an American prisoner strapped into a chair in a gas chamber as he is sentenced to death. The prisoner's black hood carries a Westinghouse Electric Company logo." source
In this particularly gruesome image, a fireman attempts to put out the flames of a burning truck but is too late to save the driver. Many of Weegee's shocking photos, like this one, can be found at the International Center of Photography.
About a 2012 photography exhibition of Weegee's the New York Times wrote, "This exhibition affirms that Weegee brought to street photography a new, often shocking vitality. The combination of grit, humanity, intensity, merciless opportunism and spatial precariousness...regularly resulted in pictures that you can’t stop looking at...and don't soon forget."
